Stick Up: Limited Edition

For three days last week I was working in collaboration with Hanne Mannheimer of Manifold studio group in London. The work was part of the "Stick-Up" exhibition hosted by airspace gallery as part of the British Ceramics Biennial 2011.

The project saw six collaborations from twelve artists, six from each organisation to see information about the other collaborations go here.

Our collaboration looked at process, interpretation, and tool making. I made a series of tools and machines, suggestive of those used in the ceramics industry. Hanne then had to interperet their function and purpose without instruction. The machines were built from scrap materials which resulted in either unintentional or faulty functions.

"I was really inspired by my visit to the old Spode factory, with things just left, broken and covered in dust. It made me want to re-create these piles of plates and objects. It has been really interesting working with Andrew who has a similar intuitive and experimental approach to me but a completely different background. He constructed a range of different tools or instruments based around ceramic processes such as jiga jollying, extruding and throwing. Often the function was obscure and somewhat flawed. Responding intuitively to his creations or additions I experimented making stacks or groups of clay objects allowing both the clay and the tools to limit or interfere with my interaction with the clay. The resulting objects were created from clay- recycled scrap clay used in a previous exhibition- and were viewed as a series of mass produced failures. They were unusable malformed and often nondescript in what they were. However they were consistent in this. Perfect!

Here is the statement about the work:

Limited Edition: Hanne Mannheimer & Andrew Branscombe. Taking inspiration from the industrial decay experienced in many of the former potteries around the city the work looks at processes and mass production. Inspiration was drawn from the stacks of unfinished ware, machinery and individuality found in these sites. The artists first met while installing the BCB exhibi- tion at the former Spode factory. They took the opportunity to look around the derelict areas of the factory, which helped to form the method of working as well as a wealth of raw materials. The factory sites often contain equipment and machines unique to a particular process or person. Andrew created machines using found materials, which were suggestive in appearance of existing processes and equipment. Then without instruction the equipment was given to Hanne who intuitively used the creations. Both the tools and clay became flawed, impractical and limiting to the way of working, creating a range of mass- produced failures.

"INGRAINED"

“Ingrained” is a performance and object-based work that examines the idea of the traditional seaside pastime of building sandcastles. Using existing scientific studies, part of the work is the documentation of a performance in which the perfect sandcastle is created. The second part of the work demonstrates an attempt to defy the ultimate fate of a sandcastle of succumbing to the waves, by preserving it within a controlled environment. ‘Ingrained’ talks of control, process, and human attempts to reign over object as a means of gratification. In some ways we strive to create a balance between nature and our creations, by subduing natural processes. In other ways, as in the creation of a sandcastle, we relish the ultimate destruction of the object by nature.

The work references the nature of a hotel room as a transitory space, the anonymity it affords people, and the opportunity that is provided for criminal or unscrupulous activity to take place. We unwittingly leave traces of ourselves throughout everyday life, no matter how hard we try to prevent this from happening. “Occupation Evidence” provides a means for someone to contaminate a space using traces belonging to the artist.

The piece is presented as a kit, in which is contained evidence to be planted in a room. The items in the kit include fragments of skin, nails hair and fluids, which the artist would unwittingly leave behind. These objects would enable a profile to be formed using DNA and forensic processes. The kit enables a process of reverse forensics to take place. In turn the subterfuge would create a picture of the person and the events that might have happened in a space- indeed should a crime be committed in that space the artist could be implicated through the residual evidence the kit provides- an element of risk on the artist’s part. In another way the piece suggests a mythological existence for the artist. Suggesting that they have traveled to a particular place when in fact they have not, suggests a different existence to the one that the artist usually presents.

Retrograde: is a film that looks at the fallibility of storage, and how the promises of contemporary technology can become limited. The film depicts the interior of a VHS Video Tape Recorder. Initially filmed using a High Definition camera the footage has been deliberately deteriorated by reproducing it on various ‘older’ technologies, from DVD to the notorious VHS. The VHS media has then been re-recorded repeatedly until the resulting image becomes completely incoherent.

Today’s technological world is driven by storage, the Internet is built from huge databases, but how long can this storage last, and does the constant replication of this data cause the original qualities or meanings to become diluted or erased.
